In addition to the autofs-4.x.x package, you also need to patch your kernel.
The updated kernel module is backwards compatible, so it should work fine
with autofs 3.x.x packages.

For 2.2.x kernels, there's only one patch, which updates the autofs module. 

2.3.41 onwards comes with the autofs4 filesystem standard.

When using autofs4 as a module in 2.3.41 onwards, you must put

	alias autofs autofs4

in your modules config file (/etc/conf.modules or /etc/modules.conf)
